Choosing between dual Ausbildung and school-based vocational paths
A practical comparison for applicants weighing Betrieb-based dual training against schulische Ausbildung options.
Dual Ausbildung places you under contract with an Ausbildungsbetrieb while you attend Berufsschule on a block or day-release schedule. You receive an Ausbildungsvergütung and learn on real client or production work. School-based vocational programmes keep more of your week in the classroom and may include shorter Praktika instead of a full employment contract.
Neither path is automatically “better.” Dual training suits people who want early workplace rhythm and can relocate or commute to a company that hires. School-based routes can help when places in a dual Beruf are scarce in your region, or when you need a more structured classroom environment before entering a workshop.
Ask how exams are organised, whether the qualification is recognised nationwide, and what happens if you need to change employers mid-training. Those details matter more than marketing language on school websites.
