Language expectations for English-speaking Ausbildung applicants
Where English helps, where German is non-negotiable, and how to describe your level honestly in a Bewerbung.
English can help in internationally oriented firms, yet most dual Ausbildung contracts assume you will follow Berufsschule lessons and safety instructions in German. Overstating your level creates problems by week two of training.
State your German using a clear framework such as CEFR (A2, B1, B2) and support it with course certificates when you have them. If you are still building fluency, explain the classes you attend and how you will continue during the Ausbildung — employers worry about dropouts more than imperfect grammar on day one.
For the Bewerbung itself, German documents are usually expected. An English cover note may accompany them when the posting is published in English, but do not assume that replaces a German Motivationsschreiben.
If your spoken German is stronger than your writing, say so and offer a short call. Many Ausbildungsleiter prefer hearing you speak before judging a letter written with heavy editing help.
